Dublin based composer Ian Smyth’s latest feature is Rewind directed by PJ Dillon for Carbon Films. It stars Amy Huberman who won the IFTA Best Actress Award for her performance and Ian’s score was also critically acclaimed by many of the reviewers. The score also featured a song co-written with Thomas Walsh, one half of Duckworth Lewis Method. He has composed an orchestral score for director Richie Smyth’s The Mulbury Project, a sci-fi horror feature set in the near future, produced by Northern Ireland’s Heaven’s Gate Films.
He recently completed work on Ian Thuillier’s Driven, a short for Kennedy Films. His other shorts include The Wonderful Story of Kelvin Kind for director Ian Power and Fastnet Films; Man of Fire, directed by Keiron J. Walsh; Neurotica for Three Forks Productions and director Roger Rawlings; and Screwed directed by Colm Balread.
His many television credits include Seacht, the first Irish language drama for the BBC directed by Rob Quinn for Tyrone Productions; the animated children’s series Schrödinger’s Cat, directed by Nuala Cunningham for RTE; and two seasons of the science series Investigators for Decade Film/RTE.
His first composing break came with commercials and he quickly became the top choice for many production companies and directors for the variety of styles he was able to perfect. To date he has more than 300 commercials to his credit including major campaigns for Irish Life, Liberty Insurance, Mangers Cider, Lucozade, Texaco, National Lottery, Lyons Tea,and more.
Away from media music he is composing a series of concert cello suites inspired by the drawings of Aoife Ní Chaoilte that accompanied her short story A Day in the Life of a Butterfly.
Ian got his first drum kit at the age of 9 and quickly progressed through to working with various bands. He came to the attention of Paiste Cymbals in Dublin who asked him to do drum clinics and demonstrations and through them met the legendary drummer Dom Famularo who quickly became his mentor and inspired Ian to enroll at Boston’s Berklee College of Music to study film scoring. He graduated with an excellent degree and on returning to Dublin quickly moved into composing fulltime. Meanwhile he continues to study piano at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and performs live when work allows.
