LAWS, Tim (UK)

Tim Laws was a successful songwriter, record producer, and commercials writer before moving across to writing scores for television. His credits include The Bill for Talkback Thames; BBC3’s comedy Massive, starring Ralph Little and Johnny Vegas; ITV’s comedy FM, written by Ian Curtis and starring Chris O’Dowd; 2 series of CBBC’s hit Sadie J and he’s recently finished work on series 3; worldwide hit Horrid Henry for CITV; and the Maverick Television/Channel 4, long running series Embarrassing Bodies.

He co-wrote Gabrielle’s multi-million selling single Dreams and went on to write, produce and mix tracks on all 3 studio albums by Lighthouse Family. Over the years he has written, produced and mixed songs for many hit acts including Stevie Wonder, INXS, the Liberty X hit Holding On For You, The Sugababes, Will Young, Mark Owen’s top 3 hit Child, S-Club 7, Atomic Kitten, Blue and Emma Bunton. He recently wrote and produced an amazing new group called  #1 Citizen whose first recordings.

As a songwriter Tim was signed to Universal Music when he was approached to pitch for some television shows being made by Freemantle Media. At first these were just theme tunes and kid’s shows but he was then asked to create and develop underscore for Talkback Thames’ The Bill and it was this experience that propelled him into the mainstream of media music. Since then he’s worked on programmes for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Maverick, Talkback Thames and Freemantle. After several of his songs were featured in international tv advertising campaigns he started writing and producing bespoke music for major commercials and continues to do so.

Tim’s grandfather was a professional pianist and his father a guitarist and by the age of 9 he played piano, lead guitar, bass guitar and drums and was already in his first band. He went on to play in Two Extremes alongside Steve Mac who is now producer of Westlife, JLS and others. With Network he signed to Chrysalis Records and the band had several releases and toured extensively in Europe. After Dreams became a no 1 hit all round the world he quit the band to concentrate on songwriting and producing. This gave him the opportunity to develop a skill for arranging and sometime also conducting large string sections and orchestras which was to stand him in good stead as he moved into scoring for film and television.
