Charlie joined SMART following continuing success and demand for his music for film and theatre. His latest work, scoring Shirley Day’s original contemporary theatre production, A Brief Timeline Of Enemies And Friends, demonstrates his ability to combine a variety of musical styles to create unique, emotive and captivating music with a powerfully narrative quality.
A classically trained violinist from the age of 7, Charlie performed in ensemble and orchestral concerts in the UK and throughout Europe during his school years. In 2011 he consolidated his growing involvement in world music, having his work premiered by the international kora virtuoso Tunde Jegede at the Purcell School of Music.
He graduated with a music degree from Durham University, where he specialised in composition, writing contemporary chamber music for world class performers such as Richard Casey and Ensemble7Bridges. Through his studies, he has also acquired a depth of knowledge in world music, sound design, electronic music and classical orchestration, which he applies to his work. He scored an award winning Haagen Dazs commercial for Singapore, When You Know You Know, directed by Bennett Johnson (2014) whilst studying for his degree.
Since graduating he has worked on the BFI’s Britain On Film project, and enjoyed frequent collaborations with director Shirley Day on short films, composing for The Compliment (2016) and sound editing for Role Play (2016), a semi finalist in the Hollywood Screenings Film Festival.
Charlie specialises in hybrid music and loves to combine diverse sounds and match them to story-telling. He is naturally collaborative and thoroughly dedicated to his work.
“I have worked with Charlie on a series of projects and his knowledge of musical composition and the way he applies himself to each new project never ceases to impress. He is able to work to a brief, deliver within a quick time frame, and adjust compositions in line with feedback. His wide range of music and his talent as a composer mean that when I am struggling to put my finger on what exactly is required, Charlie is able to put forward a series of suggestions, and always hits the nail on the head. He’s a real pleasure to work with, and able to work collaboratively with the whole production team. Charlie’s music is the bedrock of our latest production. He has an awesome talent as a composer, whilst remaining delightful to work with and a great team player. I highly recommend him and certainly intend to work with Charlie again.” – Shirley Day, Producer
